Fair point ... but the Freiburg-Überlingen-Friedrichshafen variant appears to entail a fair amount of Bundesstrasse and not that much Autobahn, so I'm guessing that's not what was being suggested.
We'd be starting in Colmar so from there it's probably quicker to drive North past Strasbourg, cross the border to Baden-Baden, then the A8 past Stuttgart and then Munich...
From Colmar to Munich and then onwards to Salzburg the fastest way is indeed via the A8, I would not expect too much traffic until Munich (however I havn't taken this route for years), afterwards it might get busy. In case you go farther east in Austria take the A92/A3 from Munich via Deggendorf to Linz. The federal highways via Schwarwald and Ueberlingen are quite good, but at this time of the year you might have snow in the black forrest. However if you go only to Bregenz, then I'd take the direct federal highways.
