This part of your plan scares me - wouldn't you basically be a stowaway if you're on a train you don't have (and can't get) a ticket for?

Edit to add: Plus, I'm not even sure your RTE-NYP instead of BBY-NYP argument holds water. A conductor might not know that the two are the same price, and since you got on at BBY, you technically do not have a valid ticket until the train reaches RTE. So I think that would also qualify you as a stowaway. YMMV though.
