I was last in Bali two years ago. Our cruise company put us up at the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel - a bit big and packagy but very pleasant for one night and it had beautiful grounds. However, the whole area was a complete dump - too many hotels, too many people and the drive to and from the airport was a traffic jam. TripAdvisor lists over 300 hotels in Ubud and try GoogleEarthing Legian/Kuta and Jimbaran areas - just one big hotel after another. So that's why I dislike Bali nowadays . . . I'm sure places exist inland that are still lovely and the north coast is possibly wonderful but I think the island has become a bit of a hassle.
