Ah, now this is interesting. Are you suggesting to go via Freiburg-Überlingen-Friedrichshafen? Google Maps claims this only takes 30 mins longer than via Basel-Zürich-St.Gallen. Impressive if it's true! How are the roads and how is the traffic? FWIW we'd be travelling on a Sunday.

Last time I avoided Switzerland I was coming back from Champagne and from that far North I went via Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Munich. That's definitely the long way round

I'm a bit nervous about weekend traffic at the moment as there have been horrendous tailbacks (both in and out of Austria) at the weekends due to all the skiers...
