I think you did misunderstand. It is a category 1-4 at signup and then a category 1-5 annually at anniversary date.
As suggested, I would call and ask if they can help you out and let them know the situation. They may ask you to charge a certain amount in the next few months and if they do, it is up to you if you think it is reasonable. If they do not offer this, maybe you could suggest it? Just an idea to try to get you an extension to the expiration date.
