I have also taken monitors from the US to Europe as checked luggage and again no problems. When I have taken the monitors as checked luggage typically I'll put some "fragile - electronic equipment" labels on the box for reinforcement.

I had a 50" plasma delivered from Newegg with a completely dented back, scratched side and ding on the corner, in it's sealed box so YMMV. Also my main worry wouldn't be handling so much as theft.... Baggage handlers/TSA are well documented on their ability to pilfer....
