The big difference is that UPS generally doesn't see much pilferage. You're suggesting that the OP check the monitor with a commercial airline that by its own terms and conditions refuses any liability for theft or damage to electronic devices. IMO, checking it would not be a good idea.

Sure, the box is slightly too tall, but it's going to fit in an overhead bin (OP is likely on a 738) and I'd carry it on.
