Yeah, it won't be possible to watch the sunrise from the Sugarloaf Mountain. I can recommend the right end of Copacabana Beach instead. Locals call it 'Posto 6'. If you have any trouble explaining where you want to go, just ask for Sofitel and you'll get there.

Good idea. If you continue to walk just beyond that area, passing Copacabana Fort, you can walk through a passageway to Arpoador, where the rocks are a popular place for sunset and sunrise.
If you're in that location at mealtime, a block back from the Sofitel is Siri Mole, home of excellent acaraje, moquecas etc, as mentioned a post or two back.
