Switzerland (car) transit with booze

I am going to need to go from Austria to France to collect a car full of wine (maybe a dozen cases or so).

Rumour has it that you can legally drive in to Switzerland, through, then out again with lots of booze as long as you declare it at both ends. Possibly also paying a deposit on the tax/duty that would be due if you failed to complete the transit (ie you imported it)

Anyone actually done this? Does it work and how much hassle is it?

For bonus credit: are you allowed a stopover eg a night or two in Switzerland with the booze while in transit?
