Ba or travel insurance?

Hi,

I've had a rather disrupted 24 hours- leg 3 of my EDI-DFW-CHS trip. First two legs fine (apart from intermittently dysfunctional IFE) but once at Dallas, last leg was delayed for several hours and then cancelled for weather reasons- I think the plane couldn't get in from wherever it was arriving from.

A loooong queue later, was told all flights were full for the following day and Monday would be the earliest I could fly to charleston. After some thinking on the hoof (wasn't going to the back of that queue again!) I asked for a flight to somewhere nearby, and got Charlotte, which is a 150 odd mile drive away, but at least will get me in today rather than tomorrow. But my bag apparently still has to go to Charleston, for reasons that couldn't be explained to me at 10pm last night! Good thing I have a car...

The AA gate staff were pretty unhelpful really, and couldn't offer any alternative routes or any better ideas. They also said that there would be no compensation payable as it was a weather related issue.

I'm down a night at the airport hotel and a car hire charge, and I wonder whether BA contribute to those, or whether I just have to try and get the travel insurance to stump up? It's not really the cost that bothers me, and I know no one can do much if the weather turns bad, but the real lack of engagement from AA When things do go wrong- no bag, no clothes, no information, and no sense that they'd be keen to help sort it out- are frustrating and would make me think twice about picking an itinerary including AA. Or is it just that BA themselves are actually rather better at sorting these things out - I've certainly had much more positive experiences in the UK when similar circumstances have prevailed.
