AA rules are totally different, and far more restrictive when it comes to stopoevers/regions transited etc.

If you do chose to do EWR-IAH, that is completely within the rules for UA awards, you'll just pay the extra $5-10 in taxes.
thank you guys so much! we'll make sure not to have any check in luggage - it's pretty pricey to have check in baggage on both british air and aer lingus! i tried adding on a segment to DUB but we'll probably fly from GLA and aer lingus unfortunately doesn't appear to offer awards on their GLA-DUB flights thru united.
