Yes it's allowed but there will have to be saver award seats available in order to do the change..same rule applies to award tickets as revenue tickets. If there is space in X you can do SDC.
A quick note about this: X inventory opens up just like the other fare classes, between T-24 and T-3, assuming there are at least a little available Y inventory.
This is an awesome thing that few seem to appreciate.
