Not sure when you will need the 5 tickets by (several years down the road or next few months?)
Also another possibility is to split up your family: you with 2 kids and wife with the other or vis versa using both AA and UA,
Also sometimes trying to get 5 on the same flight is difficult on FF at best so using both programs at one time could actually be easier. Be on differ flights but arrive at same destination on the same day if done correctly.
So accumulate miles with both you and wife: AA, US Air (the miles could become AA by next year) and also get UA (UA card, Chase Sapp. Ink etc). Just my thoughts
