That's because DL is probably saving their 744s for the next HND allocation, but will still downgauge to an A330 in short time .

I can see both routes working out well. While UA is stronger at ORD than AA is, AA is much stronger at GRU than UA is, in terms of awareness. LAX-GRU will have to be mainly O/D but there is a market there (LAX-Brazil is one major reason why the 772s fly LAX-MIA domestically).
