JAL also blocks seats based on fare types. Unless something has changed, you won't be able to select 1A even if you call JAL when you are on an award ticket for example.

But the good news is SS7 will most likely be rolled out on this route from November 2014 and you will be able to enjoyed the New JAL Suite.
