I'm sorry, but if I'm flying a premium class (Business or First) then meal service is part of the premium experience. Delta, like most airlines, uses a caterer who can provide a meal for people with dietary restrictions. There's no excuse for an airline to not provide a viable meal option. The entire special meal ordering is automated and not very complicated. The OP had a good attitude and laughed at the experience, and I would probably have done the same.
