Hard to get a straight answer on this one. Actually seems like any US elite is entitled to upgrade on US metal, no matter the ticket issuer. One things for sure, something goes wrong lately with UA issued tickets, with autoupgrade disabled. One possible workaround is to buy the ticket on UAL.COM without entering a DM number, and later call US to have them add it. Seems to have worked once for me.
This is not at all correct!! The flight has to be sold as a US Airways operated flight not a codeshare to be upgrade elligble.
This is directly from the us airways website:
Flights must be sold as a US Airways operated flight to be eligible; flight purchased as a codeshare through one of our partners will not be eligible for upgrade.
