Munich/Salzburg- Exactly what you think it is: Picturesq with great beer. Salzburg is so close that it would be a shame to skip it. Salzburg looks like what most Americans think that European cities look like. Excellent scenery and a very walkable city.
As much as I like the scenery of Neuchwanstein I do agree the tour isn't worth it plus you only get to see a few rooms inside the castle. In addition it is PITA to get go. When I went in 2010 my friend and I took the train (he wanted to go) and it took forever. It was slow........

I would 2nd the day trip to Salzburg recomendation.
