It seems that this is not right. I don't think anyone agrees that "The extra day [has to] be what the contract says" nor that "the only way" to get a lower price is "to reserve the car for the longest you think you will need it" -- though that's what Mike's #2 message claimed.

To get a lower price, it seems the better advice is to call the rental change line. That's what Deltahater recommended ("I would call them") and what Darben and Mike's #10 message confirm.

I'm certainly not advocating that anyone ignore their contract. Quite the contrary, I came here as a nonexpert in rental car pricing, hence seeking this group's good advice on what to do in this circumstance. I wouldn't say every statement here was perfectly accurate, but I'm happy with the result I achieved. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
It is unfortunate that you did not at all comprehend my posts and feel the need to keep saying I was wrong, even though it was completely accurate for what you asked.

I have gone back and removed them in case anybody else found them unclear.

Sorry for any confusion, even though I stand by what I posted.

For anybody else, please try to understand the difference between what was asked, the cost of extra days, and what this thread became about which was not asked, extending a contract. They are very different animals, and anybody who thinks they are the same will be in for a shock when they drop off their car.
