This may elicit shock and horror to many on this thread, but as a GCH of more than a dozen years, I have never had the faintest idea what the hierarchy was among the cabin crew beyond realizing that the "purser" and "cabin service director" were somehow in charge of something. Nor have I ever had to seek out the services of one or the other for any reason; if I did, I would simply approach the nearest person in a BA uniform and say "who's in charge of cabin crew?"
It makes complete sense to me to have a single person in charge of all cabin operations. I mean, how many people are we talking about managing here? A dozen? If one person can't handle that many subordinates, then something is seriously wrong. [flame suit on]
I don't really have a problem with "purser," although I do think it is rather archaic. What I do have a problem with is using the word "lead" as a noun (at least, if you do not mean the thing that you keep hold of your dog with, or the top scoring position in a sporting event).
