I am not sure why OP is insistent on a nonstop flight to BOM, but I think the only options are AI and UA out of NYC area. Taking a connection in Europe is not that big of a deal as you can usually transit without a visa and the European airports are generally nice.

There's no inconsistency there. "Direct" flights can be either nonstops, or through-flights that make one (or more) en-route stops, but operate with a single flight number.
And in this case the stop is in Brussels IIRC.
