Thanks for the feedback. In terms of flights, I've got good award options into LAX and out of SFO. One way car rentals also seem cheaper from LA to SF than vice versa.

My kids are not Disney types, they haven't even watched many Disney cartoons, so planning on skipping that. Aquariums and zoos and the like would be nice during the city part of our trip, but that's not my primary purpose.

I like the idea of relaxing time near the ocean and short hikes (more like walks). Is Sequoia N Park something that would make sense?

Are there 'chain' hotels asking the way?
Yes, plenty of chains in the cities I noted on central coast.

I recommend sf/la trip. Aquarium and sights in monterey, beaches and natural areas thru central coast, museums in sf, muir woods in marin, etc.

Sequoia is inland... a different route.
