Something to keep in mind...

1) To get the maximum amount of time from a platinum challenge it should be completed in March, as February is the change date for status. If you hit Platinum in March 2013 you will till Feb 2015.

2) Waiting later in the year will generally bring better promotions. Something like 3 stays and get 1 free night. Since you are going for the least amount of spend, usually the double or triple points aren't nearly as great as free nights. Things like foursquare and facebook check-ins and booking online for a bonus run independently of other promotions, that is to say it's not the main promotion for a given quarter or period. Usually the cheaper hotels aren't full service and only allow for a smaller welcome gift point amenity.


There are ways other than SET codes and Starpicks to get Starwood hotel rooms for cheap. If you have a small Starwood hotel in the area call them and try and negotiate a rate. Explain what you are doing (mattress run) and tell them that you will check in and out.. that they can resell the room that day if they want. Keep in mind.. if you already have status that these cheap hotels may not give much of a point bonus for a welcome amenity and give a lower payout for MAGC (250 for both correct). So do your evaluation based on the numbers and how much your time was worth.
