There is always the chance an outbound contact from the hotel would be unwelcome.

Example:

You leave laptop (with home phone number affixed) in room in Philly hotel. Hotel calls number. Your spouse answers.

Hotel: We have your husband's / wife's laptop here in Philadelphia.
Spouse: How can that be? He was working late here in Cleveland all week, and home except for that one night he crashed at a hotel across the street from the office.
Hotel: Um... er...

Marital merriment ensues.

I suspect hotel discretion is the better part of valor (and good service) here.
