When you transfer the Standard Award to AirTran, that creates credits within AirTran that maintain the expiration date. When you transfer credits between Southwest and AirTran (both directions), that also maintains the expiration date. The trick is that when you accumulate 16 credits within your Southwest account, a new round-trip Standard Award is automatically generated with a one year expiration date.
