FWIW - this is not news.

Some time ago, a CX LHR-HKG flight was diverted to Moscow.

All HKSAR Passport holders were accommodated to a hotel. The rest - airport.

Reason - visa.

Finding seats for 200+ stranded pax is not easy, especially when the airline need to determine who to accommodate first. In this case when Chinese travelers are involved, airline will take extra cautions.

That transit hotel is hourly-rate based. Beside - do you really think you can accommodate everyone?
