Does it make sense to use an upgrade instrument if the instant upgrade doesn't clear?
Does it ever makes sense for a 1K who purchased an M (or higher) fare for which the Instant Upgrade could not be confirmed to request a (wait listed) upgrade using miles or a regional upgrade?
Parsing that further:
- Does requesting an upgrade cancel the eligibility for the instant upgrade?
- If not, does the instant upgrade always take priority over the mileage or regional upgrade, as indicated in the policy below (which only applies to within 5 days of the flight)?
- Finally, if the instant upgrade does take priority, would the miles or regional upgrade be redeposited if an upgrade clears?
United Policy
- Premier members on eligible Y- and B-class fares, as well as Premier 1K members on M-class fares: Instant upgrades that weren't confirmed in advance, sorted by fare class, then Premier status
- All travelers on waitlisted Global Premier Upgrades, Regional Premier Upgrades, and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards: Sorted by Premier status of the redeeming account, then fare class and time of request
- All remaining Premier members using Complimentary Premier Upgrades: Sorted by Premier status, then fare class and award travel Priority within 24 hours.
