It probably dates back many, many years. It's similar to how they are officially "Delta Air Lines" and not "Delta Airlines."

A couple of years ago, there was one gate agent (I forget where, maybe LGA or ROC) that still said "nonstop jet service" in her announcement prior to boarding. Always got a real kick out of that
