How did the DL term 'gate house' originate?

As much as I've flown, I've consistently only heard the term gate house (basically gate) on DL. On AA, departure lounge is used (which I think sounds more elegant), and UA, the term gate is used. Does anyone know the origination of this term and how it began being used on Delta Air Lines?
