Fragile and perishable items are often accepted as checked luggage with
limited liability for loss, damage or delay.
Sacks and bags cannot be fastened securely and usually do not provide
sufficient protection for fragile contents. Additionally, items in
corrugated cardboard boxes, including cardboard boxes provided by
United, are considered fragile items and are not covered under our
general liability policy. We transport thousands of bags every day, and
we do our best to handle them with care. A small percentage of the bags
we transport become damaged.
Does not address my specific question about a TV really....
I read it as as long as the measurements are within our guidelines you can check the item. What they said is if Anything is in a cardboard box then UA isnt responsible whatsoever for whatever is in the box and wont sell you any ins either = you are on your own if anything happens to whatever may be in the cardboard box
Had this problem myself a few weeks ago wanted to check a statue I was bringing my bro est value $6k and in a cardboard box. In the end I took the staue on board in a carry-on shoulder bag and put it in a closet (weighed over 15 lbs). On Thurs Im checking in the cardboard box and inserts it was shipped in so that if he wants to sell it its easier for him to. Wasnt chancing sending it underneath w/o being able to purchase ins for it and find out it grew some legs after checking it in and it walked away on its own
So it seems UA is saying Well do you feel its your lucky day? and that the box will actually show up in Baggage Claim area and the TV will be whole. That only you can decide if you want to take that gamble At $6k I wasnt willing to take it, Im sure others have taken it and nothing went wrong
