VTOL aircraft have terrible safety records compared to conventional aircraft. Commercial air travel is already the safest form of transportation. 2012 was the safety year for air travel since 1945. There have been no fatalities in the US since 2009 with the last major incident being AA587 in 2001. VTOL would be a huge step backwards.
