This is NOT acceptable, despite what the desk agent tells you (no, the car is not brand new with no damage, I don't car if everyone else "just signs without complaining").
You go to the counter, you check the contract to ensure they haven't added extras (demand that it be in English), you check the damage sheet, you go to the car park, then compare their damage sheet to reality. You then go grab an employee and convince them to note down the new damage. You check for MISSING components like bumper strips, aerials, spare wheels etc.
You photograph both copies of the damage sheet, the car from all angles, including the interior. You then email these pictures to yourself.
Most importantly, you purchase excess reduction cover from an insurance company because excesses are sky high in Italy (e.g. 1200 EUR, 1600 EUR...).
I had experiences with two companies in Italy (same holiday) and even AutoEurope could not help.
I think most of the Hertz locations are franchised, not corporate, BTW.
