I think this depends a bit on the kids. My own, 8 and 12 now, have always liked traveling, and liked airports. Unless the connection is several hours I would take that if it means flying into a smoother airport and having a shorter drive afterwards. Then again, I know people who would gladly pay double in order to avoid connections when they travel with their kids.
