I regularly SDC with an A fare into an A fare (which means keeping the FC seat), provided that there is A fare availability. If the SDC flight is at A0, then yes you would go standby, but most likely would clear into the F2 assuming you are a diamond.
I have gone A/P to F when only F was available but only via the diamond desk.
