Unfortunately these things do happen and airlines do overbook their seats. However the airline didn't handle this situation like they are legally obliged to. You are each owed €600 for denied boarding in accordance with EU regulation 261/2004 (see here for more info). There is no way they can get out of this and they should have notified you of this at the time and paid you there and then.
