And I am sure that smokers might very likely pay an increased fee for such rooms.
About twenty years ago, before it was common to have community smoking bans, office buildings that were voluntarilly smoke free use to have cheaper insurance rates, so I am sure that is the case in hotels as well.

I believe Hyatt charges more for smoking rooms at some of their properties now. I know it is nothing as absurd as the pet fee. My wife and I sometimes have to travel with pets for cat and dog shows and we are told there is more cleaning costs involved with a room with a pet and have to pay a LOT sometimes to have our pets with us.

Marriott's US and Canada properties have all been smoke free for probably five or more years now (exception being the Cosmo in Vegas). Most Hyatts are smoke free.

As a non-smoker I don't care if a property has smoking rooms or not as long as the property ALWAYS honors my request for a non-smoking room. I don't want to be in a smoking room anymore than someone with a pet allergy would want to be in a room whose last occupant was travelling with pets.
