Notes/ideas:

1. Pay with a marriott visa to get an additional 5points/$ and a night towards status for each $3000.

2. If you intend to spend more than $17,000 it pays off to talk to the hotel and book two events, so your accrual isn't capped.

3. Check the events page on marriott.com - they run promotions periodically for double points.
