So no, you don't need an onward boarding pass.. Just make sure you get a boarding pass/you're able to get a boarding pass or else you'll be stranded!
I thought the flight number for widebody flights across the Tasman always started with 1.

If you don't get your boarding pass at origin, you can always get one issued at the BNE transfer desk. Worst case is you will get your boarding pass at the gate, assuming the flight is not oversold.
