What have you heard? Most of Brooklyn is safer than parts of NJ. Much more pedestrian traffic at night and on subways.

As path is 24 hrs again. Drive to Newark (maybe less safer vs. Brooklyn), Harrison or jersey city and take path to WTC and 2-3 from there. You cAn stay as long as you wish at show.
