As other people have said, it all depends on what you intend to use the points for.

If it's for Australian domestic flights, upgrades etc, you'll probably find QF simpler. Even for International flights and partner flights, QF has good availability online and make the whole process fairly painless.

However.

If you're prepared to do a bit of searching yourself, take a bit more time and be prepared for a few phone calls, I've found VA points to be more valuable as far as international flights are concerned. Apart from a pretty easy points + pay system for VA flights (without mucking about between classic/any seat awards on QF), flights on partner airlines are easy to book over the phone without taxes being excessive as QF sometimes charge.

For example I booked a one-way F redemption on EY from CDG-AUH with VA for 58k points + $115 which I was pretty happy about. If I look up a similar length flight, say LHR-JFK in F with BA, QF want 78k points for an F redemption.

I know other people might disagree, but if international flights are what you're chasing and you're happy picking from VA, VS, DL, EY, SQ, HA, VX and NZ, then VA points would be my personal choice.
