I assume that the DL ticket is a coach award ticket (paid with miles) and you have no status with DL.

1) You can always purchase EC seats for DL flights, including many CL Connection RJs.

2) You can also change award tickets for $150, provided you do it more than 72 hours before the flight's departure. So you might be able to skip JFK or leave it earlier, but doing so will cost $150.
