I'd say, for someone who hasn't been to Brooklyn before, Park Slope and Bay Ridge are safe, especially along 4th Ave. I've always felt safe in Sunset Park, but others might suggest staying away from Sunset at night, especially around the Park and the Cemetary. It has changed a lot these past years though, for the better, and is nowhere close to the bad reputation it used to have.
