You can always act ignorant about it. I'd say just try booking it if you haven't.
When redeeming online, you have to specify the relationship using the drop-down menu. If done over the phone, the agent would ask the same question. I wouldn't suggest lying about this.
Ask JAL to see if they could redeposit half of the SPG points into your account and then make the transfer via your friend's account again. It's a long shot but doesn't hurt asking.
