I too have had success getting award nights opened up by calling the plat line. They then called the hotel I was interested in, and had two nights opened up so that I could have 7 consecutive days.
That is very similar to what happened to me. On a four day stay, the first, second, and fourth nights were available, but the third night was not. The Plat rez line called the hotel, spoke with a manager, and came back to me with all four nights I needed. This would certainly NOT have been possible using only marriott.com to find award availability.
