If you're considering the medium mother lode, which you will need to check in, then why not get the larger bag anyway for a couple more $$. It's 29" vs the Eagle Creek 28".
Better to be away thinking how much space you have in your bag, instead of wondering how all that stuff's going to fit.
Both bags look good, but OP indicated that he is never going to be over 23kg, so the 28" and 29" bags are likely too big for him. I find that a 25/26" bag would be the perfect size to pack full and keep weight down to 23kg.
That being said, my wife has the B&R rolled duffel, and it is definitely a solid quality bag.
