I've printed OeBB and DB CNL tickets on letter and have had no problems. I do believe they are actually downloaded to your browser as PDFs so all you have to do is print that out, or even put it on a electrnic device.
The DB and CNL tickets I have used were indeed in PDF-format. It is necessary to make a print before you take the train, showing the PDF on your laptop will not be enough. Letter and A4 are almost the same size, and the difference will not matter in reality, the guard will probably not even notice the differerence.
