AC hotel compensation after the fact?

Due to the Saturday ground stop in YYZ, my flight was held at point of departure and then late arriving, so I missed my cxn to YWG. The flight I was rescheduled for was cancelled around 23:00. I heard that agents at the N pier were helping pax out, but when I got there it looked like a total refugee camp with hundreds of people in a slow-moving line. I presume that some people were being put up for the night.

My pregnant wife and I were exhausted so we booked a cheap room on hotwire and went off to try to get some rest instead of waiting hours longer to try and get a hotel voucher.

I thought I'd send in a request for compensation for the hotel, but before I do I was wondering if anyone could offer any insight as to whether AC would be likely to honor such a request? Normally I would expect that wx-related issues would not entitle one to any compensation and I wouldn't bother asking, but I did overhear some people in the terminal referring to hotel vouchers and the sort.

Anyone with experience with this sort of thing know if there is a chance of being reimbursed after the fact or can I kiss the money goodbye?
