Consequently, you can buy a ticket for the Basel Bad - Basel SBB section for this train on the DB website, and just stay on the train. (If the CNL conductor gets bolshie - unlikely - just move through to the IC portion of the train at Basel Bad ).
I actually looked into this, but the IC did not have first class for sale, only second. My reservation requires a first class ticket, so this wasn't possible.

I ended up spending 7.20 EUR on a Basel Badischer - Basel SBB full fare using the ICE mentioned above. Problem solved... I hope!
