They didn't screw you, following the published rules. How do they know you are giving the bag back? Anyone could use that excuse. Take all liquids out of one, move to one of the checked bags and carry one on. No brainier.
+1 - I was prepared to do this at Christmas leaving LAX on my way back to LHR.
At the Sky Priority check in/bag drop, as it was a fairly full flight and I knew the expensive 3rd bag fee, I asked the TA if it was possible to check it at no cost in order to keep one more roller out of the bin. Between the load on the flight, my military ID, and DM status, she gladly checked the 3rd one. I fished out my backpack before checking the bag and was on my way with my "normal" carry on baggage...small backpack and purse.
