I've actually seen them do this before. IIRC when I saw is they put a 320 (or something similar) from YVR-YYZ as AC034 and then upgauged a later flight with the 77L. End result was that all the SYD pax continued to YYZ on the same plane, just a different flight number. I lucked out because I had a confirmed upgrade on a narrow body plane and got to YYZ in a pod!

This is AC your talking about. That is too early. Delay doesn't post until 30 minutes after scheduled departure when no plane is at the gate.
